Our family home has a wealth of local history that weaves the property into the heart of the Colne Valley Cloth Industry

Spinning Mill House is situated in the centre of Slaithwaite, a proper working village where we love to live. We are surrounded by history and innovation, welcoming visitors from all over the world who are here for family or business. Sometimes both coincide, we have had guests chatting at the breakfast table who discovered they are related to each other through marriage. We love to meet new people, with many guests returning again and again, we consider this to be confirmation that we are doing something right!

We look forward to being able to welcome you into our home, the kettle will be on and there will be cake too.

The history of our house.

What’s in a name?

We purchased the property in 2013 with the sole ambition to offer Bed and Breakfast to visitors in the valley. We discovered the property had been built in 1876 by a gentleman who had owned The Commercial pub. He was a mayor of the village and a founding director of Slaithwaite Spinning Company Ltd.

George Henry Walker (not related) was a person of influence and papers we have read about him state that “he was one of the kindest gentlemen ever met...”.

The spinning company was a cotton mill in a worsted valley, an unusual development but an important one, as the canal linked transport from Liverpool to Manchester and directly into the West Riding where labour and the relevant skills were prevalent. There were four mills in total and Mill 4 still stands, it is a fully working mill, producing beautiful leisure wear and wool products under the names of Stylecraft Wools & Glenbrae leisure wear.

Spinning Mill House today

The clothing and weaving industries are still alive and kicking in Slaithwaite. There are a number of companies who are known worldwide for the quality goods they make. McNair Shirts, Marling & Evans, Schofield & Smith are well respected businesses and leaders in their field, putting the village firmly on the map.

We believe George Henry Walker would have approved of how we have re-furbished and updated the house. William Morris wallpapers adorn the bedrooms, we provide free wi-fi connection, fridges, tea & coffee making facilities, I – pod docks, TV's and fresh milk available in the accommodation.

We offer a comprehensive menu for breakfast and can cater for food allergies and preferences. If you prefer to self cater, we provide a “Welcome Pack" for guests staying in The Vault.
